Panyu is an interesting place, many people will know Panyu as it’s near Haizhu district where the Canton Fair is held, China’s largest trade fair. But many may not know that further south of the Canton Fair complex there are several large markets. Two such markets are the large catering equipment and hotel supplies markets.

Xinji Shaxi Hospitality Supplies Expo Center is located right next to Xiajiao subway station and at this massive market you can find just about anything that’s related to the catering and restaurant industry and hotel industry. You can find a large range of ceramics from several companies and there’s many companies who can custom make your own design cups and plates etc if the order is large enough. Along with ceramics there’s numerous glassware manufacturers representing themselves at the market.

You can also find hotel supplies such as napkins, bins, signs, curtains, linen, chairs, furniture, restaurant tables and outdoor tables and chairs. There’s also wholesale suppliers of uniforms, and there is several companies selling cooking and commercial catering equipment like ovens, mixers, bain marie, fridges, freezers, pots, pans and anything that you could imagine you might need in a kitchen. Be warned this market is huge so make sure you have some comfortable shoes on!

Across from the market is the Continental International Decoration Center and directly behind the market is Lingnan International Footwear City.

The market is easy to get to: take metro line 3 to Xiajiao station walk out exit B and it’s right in front of you.

Nearby (by taxi or metro) is the Nantian International Hotel Facilities Trading Center (technically in Haizhu District). The Nantian market is very lively and seems much more active, in terms of people buzzing around, than Shaxi, but Shaxi is certainly the more upmarket market. Nantian market is quite large too, you can find just about anything you would need to outfit a hotel or restaurant, from linen through to cookware.

Relics from the Daxi culture indicate that people inhabited the Xiangtan area in the 3rd millennium BC.  Shang Dynasty bronzewares have been found in the region, as well as tombs from the Warring States period. During the Three Kingdoms Period, the kingdom of Eastern Wu built a city in the west of modern Xiangtan City and organized the Hengyang Commandery (衡陽郡) around it. In 749, the Tang Dynasty organized the area as Xiangtan County, centered at modern Yisu River (易俗河). By the time of the Northern Song Dynasty, Xiangtan's good access to both land and water trade routes had established it as the major commercial center of the region.

Ming and Qing DynastiesEdit

Xiangtan prospered throughout the Ming Dynastyand Qing Dynasty upon an economic foundation of trading in rice and traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients, and was sometimes referred to as "Little Nanjing" or "Golden Xiangtan". Prior to the Second Opium War, Xiangtan was a central transfer point for import and export goods going to and from ports in Canton, Shanghai, and Wuhan, supported by approximately 200,000 inhabitants.

Something not to be missed in Guangzhou is Cantonese cuisine and especially, Dim Sum (CN: 點心; pinyin: dian xin). It’s also referred to as Yum Cha (CN: 飲茶) which means to drink tea, and that is exactly what happens, with families gathering together of a morning, the teapot is the first thing placed at the table with people chatting over tea while snacks make their way to the table.

While every Dim Sum restaurant will have its own specialties they will all offer the basic dim sum menu which can range from 30 to 80 options. Each dish generally contains three bite-size pieces and the general norm is to order four dishes per person which are all shared. Of course, if you are still hungry, you can go for more.

As for ordering, some restaurants, have trolleys that get wheeled around and you simply pick off those. Other restaurants use a menu with tick boxes and some modern restaurants now use tablets. If you are stuck, just show the waiter pictures of your favorites picks and they’ll fill the menu in for you. Usually.

You’ll also get given a card, on which the waiter will note down what you have received. At the end simply call the waiter over and she’ll go and tally things up and give you the bill.

Expect to pay around 100-200 RMB for two people and be very full for the rest of the day.
