Quan Jun Travel Lodge is bottom of the barrel pricewise.  Nonetheless, it boasts excellent location, right in the middle of the action, across the street from Quan Cheng Park's south gate.  The rooms here are small, and fairly clean, and a bit worn.  Cable TV and hot showers are available 24 hours a day along with air conditioning units. In order to get a room here, knowing at least a little Chinese will make things much easier.

Unfortunately there are no numbers to tell street addresses when you look for the hotel. Therefore you must look for a huge silver lotus flower sculpture in the park on your right side (I mean huge, 20 feet by 20 feet, and 10 feet tall) as you head west on Luo Yuan Road, away from the Silver Plaza towards Quan Cheng Park. When you see the flower look to the left up at the signboards, and a little 2 foot tall sign sticks out that says Lu Guan (旅馆) in Chinese.  There should be a woman below the sign selling something at a stand.  The hotel is down a little hallway behind her.  I know this sounds like Alice in Wonderland, but if you’re into adventure and economy...this is the place.

This two-story restaurant’s menu consists of mainly breads, pastas, wild greens, mushrooms, and fish. Specialties include dishes served in bamboo stalks and hollowed-out melons and squashes. For a vegetarian starter, try the sautéed baby turnip greens with dried red peppers (jian jiao luo bo ye, 尖椒萝卜叶); the dish is quite spicy, but it is too tasty not to try. Wuhan's rice bread (mian wo, 面窝) provides an interesting alternative to rice. It looks and tastes somewhat like a bagel chip with the flavor provided by black sesame seeds and onion. Usually eaten for breakfast, this bite-size version is a perfect accompaniment to a meal.

A few standouts must be tried: Shui guo xiang fan (水果香饭) is sticky rice with pieces of watermelon, pineapple, and green melon served in a melon shell. Xiao mi zhu tong pai gu (小米竹桶排骨), a Hubei province specialty, is composed of spareribs and millet which is steamed and then served together in a halved bamboo stalk. Last, but not least is "Five Treasures in a Golden Squash" (jin gua kou wu bao, 金花扣五宝), a delicate sweet soup of lotus seeds, dates, peanuts, and pumpkin served in a small pumpkin.

Chengdu nightspots usually appeal to one crowd or another. At Le Café Panam(e), however, your chance of chatting up an elderly expat are just as likely as an eager, wide-eyed Chinese university student. Whether its coffee, a classic baguette, or French desserts in the  early evening (Y10-15), a few draught beers (Y20/pint) later on, or a live DJ on the late night, there is something for every kind of Chengdu resident. The owners are deservedly proud of their reasonable prices (Y16/glass) for authentic French wine and “French corner” meetings which are held every other Friday from 7-9 PM. There is outdoor seating, a pool table, room for dancing when inspired to do so, and the 2nd floor lounge area doubles as an art exhibition area.

The recently opened Le Café Panam(e) is a dream come true for two French sinophiles. The mystery that is the Internet brought the enterprising David and Chloe together and the rest is history. David had been yearning to make a return to Chengdu and Chloe had been teaching here for quite some time. Familiar with Chengdu, and recognizing the redundant nightlife, they wanted to open an establishment that as Chloe says, “ Is anything but arrogant...”

Most significantly, David and Chloe wanted to open a comfortable place for their friends and create an informal atmosphere where any “Chengduren” (Chengdu person) could make new friends. Most of Chengdu’s nightspots can be easily categorized in terms of patrons and atmosphere, but that is not possible at this French café, bar, lounge, or whatever you want it to be. David and Chloe have only one wish, “That everyone in Chengdu, Chinese or foreign, student or traveler, business person or parent, can feel at home at Le Café Panam(e).

Directions: Le Cafe Panam(e) is in the southeast part of the city, outside the south 1st ring road. If you go there at night, tell the taxi driver "Kehua Beilu", and then say "Ya Tai Guangchang". From the "ATT" sign where the driver stops, walk across the main road, and then continue walking south until you see a plaza with bars and clubs on your left. The cafe has a red sign and is on the 2nd floor. Buses 6, 55, and 110 all pass by the plaza during the day, keep an eye out from the bus.

This popular Shanghainese restaurant is a regular for both locals and tourists alike.  Located near Xiang Yang market, Grape has a developed an impressive English menu for the tourists that swarm in after shopping. The menu is filled with delicious local dishes whose authenticity is approved by even the most discerning locals. While authentic, the menu still offers plenty of options for visitors not yet completely convinced that boiled intestines is something they’re up to try.  My favorites include the classic Ma Po Tofu (麻婆豆腐), spicy eggplant, pork and peppers stir fry, and shrimp crackers.  The menu also contains many great veggie options. Be sure to check that there is not any meat added as an ingredient to the dish. Ground pork is often used as a minor ingredient, but Chinese cuisine generally refers to these dishes as veggie. Meat and seafood dishes abound as usual.

The restaurant is always busy, but reservations are only necessary on weekend nights or holidays. If you have a large group, call ahead for a room or large table.

How to get there: Take metro line 1 to Shanxi Road Station.  Exit onto HuaiHai Road and head east. Take a right on Xiang Yang Rd. One block down, take a left on Xinle Lu.  Grape will be on the left, just after the turn on Xinle Lu.

A 2nd location:
