Yunju Temple

Yunju Temple, also named Xiyu Temple, is located at the western foot of Shijing Mountain, 75km southwest of the city center. The temple, built in the early 7th century, is famous for its storehouse of 14,278 stone tablets upon which are carved the Buddhist scriptures.

Yunju TempleThese tablets took 1,000 years to complete. Originally, there were six main halls in the temple, arranged in a line from east to west. On both the left and right sides of the main halls were dormitories for the monks, and accommodations for guests sand visitors from the imperial court.

Most of the temple was destroyed in the 1930s. Reconstruction of the temple is now underway. In 1992, it was among the “Top Ten Tourist Spots of Beijing.”
