Heraklion
Heraklion is the capital of Crete, the largest Greek island. It is also known as Iraklion and is a popular tourist destination both because it has a history that dates back to the 9th century and because it close to one other popular archaeological site known as Knossos.
Heraklion is home to a large Archaeological Museum which exhibits items pertaining to various archaeological sites in Crete such as Knossos, Zakros, Archanes and Phaestos. Besides this museum, one can visit the History Museum and the Battle of Crete Museum.
Another popular attraction is the Venetian Loggia which is today used as the city`s city hall.
There`s also the Koules Venetian Fortress built on the medieval walls used to protect the harbor. This fortification was built in the early 16th century.
Another popular spot is the old St. George´s Gate also built during the Venetian period. This Gate was previously used as a city entrance but today it serves mostly as an attraction.
Walking along the streets of old city centre will provide you with beautiful sites and each stone has a long history and its own story.
