Dongsi refers to the palace where four decorated archways are located in the east of Beijing City, which was shorted from Dongsi Pailou (dong standing for east in Chinese, si for four and pailou for decorated archway). Dongsishitiao was named in a similar way. It refers to tenth hutong in the palace where four decorated archways are located in the east of Beijing city. To be more precise, it should be called Dongsibeishitiao(bei meaning north in Chinese). However, there is no hutong around Dongsi with tiao in their name, so bei is naturally omitted.
