The first National Park proclaimed in Croatia were the Plitvice lakes, already in 1949. Twenty years later they were accepted as a UNESCO's World Heritage site. . .

The waters that are following the limestone and chalk have, over thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes is still continuing today.

The Park has a rich diversity of flora and fauna, with lot of endemic plant species. The Plitvice lakes inspired people for thousands of years - it is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.
