Our best experience in Vietnam was spending a day with Hue, who showed us another side of Hanoi.

We were four friends travelling together and wanting to attend a cooking school. Our day with Hue was so much more.

Starting early we walked from the Old Quarter to a local market near Hue's home. It was less than 20 minutes away and just across a main highway in an area rarely visited by tourists.

We were meant to bargain at all the market stalls as we purchased way to much food for lunch, but mostly just enjoyed watching Hue selecting the best stalls and produce, and discussing with us and the stallholders what was on offer. The only 'mistake' we made at this stage was to enquire about unfamiliar foods as we later found what we had enquired about had been purchased and added to lunch menu (or in the case of the fermented duck eggs, given to Max at the end of the day).

Cooking was in Hue's home in the communal kitchen on the ground floor, with assistance from her landlady and entertainment provided by her two-year-old young son. We learnt how to make crunchy sour papaya salad and perhaps the best spring rolls we had in Vietnam, plus other dishes, but most of all the pleasure was in feeling that we had been welcomed into Hue's family for a day.

Already we had booked tours from Hanoi, so we were unable to book other tours with Hue and Hanoi Biking Travel, but we would very highly recommend this family tour company, especially for any tour or activity that they run themselves.
